Richard was born in Riverside, California. Raised in the Seventh-day Adventist church, Richard grew up with a keen understanding of and desire to keep The Law. With a strong performance orientation, he excelled in school and with music. He graduated from college with a degree in Ministerial Studies.
Six months of ministerial work convinced him what he already knew in his heart—he knew lots of theological and biblical facts, but there was no reality of the abundant life Jesus promised.
Richard left ministry and spent the next twenty-six years in audio engineering and the high tech industry. During this time, Richard and his wife, Lois, studied to discover what they really believed. The Holy Spirit revealed the meaning of the Bible to them. In particular, they studied the New Covenant, forgiveness and eternal life. This led to the decision to leave the SDA church.
The more Richard learned about the love and grace of God, the more he wanted to help others leave the bondage of legalism and rest in the finished work of Christ Jesus. Richard's ministry with Basic Gospel, where he's been since 2002, is based on Paul's recommendation to the Romans: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will" (Romans 12:2).
Lois and Richard have two married children and three granddaughters. Kerry, Jason, Anna and Naomi Hillier live nearby and Kevin, Ashely and Evie Peifer live in Minnesota.
