Hope and Grace for Getting Through Life’s Hurts

Dear Friend, I’ve got a question for you. Have you ever asked this: “Where is God when I hurt?”

There have been many times in my life when I’ve asked this question. I bet there have been times in your life when you have asked it as well.

As the pop lyricist wrote in the 90’s, “everybody hurts, sometime.” Life is just filled with all types of trials and tribulations. And each of them brings a certain measure of pain and suffering into our lives.

It’s this pain and suffering that compels so many of our listeners to call the Basic Gospel radio broadcast. They want to know answers to these troubling questions.

  • Does God really care about me?
  • If He loves me, why is He letting me suffer?
  • Will He ever heal the pain?

I’m so glad they call. The Gospel message answers all of these questions, providing the hope and healing they need.

This is also why I am so glad to offer you a wonderful new resource this month, a new book entitled, The Hurt and The Healer. I want to send you a copy as an expression of my thanks for your gift this month to help Basic Gospel share the love and grace of Jesus Christ on radio and across the internet.

Andrew Farley, my good friend and a member of our board of directors, and Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me, wrote this book together.

I was fascinated when Andrew shared with me the story of how they connected. Bart, even though he was experiencing great success in the music industry, was questioning everything about his faith. He described his struggle this way: “I felt like something was missing. I didn’t know what, but I felt like I was the only one who felt that way.” He knew the answers people wanted to hear, but they weren’t real in his life.

A friend of his reached out to him and shared how the grace of God had changed his world. Bart was intrigued. His friend suggested he read Andrew’s book, The Naked Gospel.

After Bart read it, he “flipped out” over it and started tweeting about the impact of the book in his life.

Here is what he wrote: “What blew me away was the simplicity of it. It changed everything for me. It made me think, ‘If this is true, if this is who Christ really is, then yes, it’s (the Gospel) worth dying for.’”

Drew read the tweets and decided to reach out to Bart. The Hurt and the Healer came out of those interactions.

Their hope in writing this book is that many will be “set free to find real healing.” After reading through it, I can tell you this is a book that hits us right where we are and gives us the hope and grace we need to get through the hurts of life.

Here is how the book begins.

Guilt. Loneliness. A broken home. A broken heart. We all hurt.

Our hurts may be big or small. Whether it’s physical illness or abuse, job loss or an absentee parent, poverty or imprisonment, or fear of an unknown future, pain hits all of us in one way or another.

We need healing. Our only trouble is that we don’t know where or how to find it.

You will be blessed in reading how the simple, powerful message of God’s love and grace impacted both Bart and Andrew. That same message is there for you.

It is the message we have the privilege of sharing every day on the Basic Gospel broadcast.

Based on what our listeners are telling us, God’s love and grace is making a difference in their lives. I was deeply encouraged when I read this post by Kathy on our Basic Gospel Facebook page. “I love listening to the questions from callers and the love and truth provided them that transform lives. Including mine!”

Her comment also made me think again of all the wonderful friends, like you, who make this radio outreach possible. As you can see, a gift to Basic Gospel does so much more than simply cover air-time expense. Your gifts bring healing to those who are hurt, and comfort and peace to those in pain. In a word, your gifts to Basic Gospel transform lives.

Thank you for your gifts and prayers for Basic Gospel. A gift today will help more people like Kathy receive the comfort and hope they need to rise above the circumstances of life.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4)

In His love and grace,

Bob Christopher
