Recently, I watched a video on leadership. The host said something that made my ears perk up.
“Everyone listens to WIIFM – What’s In It For Me?”
In today’s culture, this seems to be the compelling reason for everything we do. From personal relationships to work requirements, even our outlook on God, today’s attitude is “what’s in it for me?” If there are no immediate tangible benefits, we move on.
This attitude is a long way from Paul’s encouragement to his Philippian brothers and sisters: “...in humility consider others better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).
The world doesn’t think this way. It is selfish to the core. Grace changes that way of thinking. It turns a selfish heart into one that genuinely looks out for the interests and needs of others.
In other words, God’s grace enables us to think in terms of “what’s in it for others?”
Your prayers and gifts to Basic Gospel are evidence of this wonderful truth in your life. Thank you for investing in the Gospel and in the lives of others.
In November, we are addressing the very difficult issue of emotional pain and mental disorders – problems like anger, anxiety and depression. I’m sure you know people, maybe in your own family, who are struggling right now to break free from these painful places.
When it comes to emotional baggage, the numbers are staggering. For example, one website cites that 40 million people in America suffer from anxiety. That number doesn’t include very prevalent issues like anger and depression.
If you are like me, you can relate in some way to their struggles. For years, guilt and shame were my nemeses. They had a stronghold on my life, and everything I did was colored by my desire to avoid them. Until...I discovered truth – truth that:
- My sins were forgiven – 1 John 2:12
- I was alive in Christ – Colossians 2:13
- Jesus Christ was alive in me – Colossians 1:27
- I was a new creation – 2 Corinthians 5:17
- God justified me in His sight and declared me righteous in Christ – Romans 5:1
- God made me holy and perfect through the blood of Jesus – Hebrews 10:10, 14
- God reconciled me to Himself – Romans 5:10, 11
- God made me His heir through the New Covenant – Hebrews 8:10-12
- God loves me – Romans 8:35-39.
My guilt and shame didn’t suddenly disappear when I started to understand all that Jesus had accomplished for me. It was a process. Truth slowly but surely transformed my thinking.
The Bible calls this the renewing of the mind. "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
There is no possible way to break free from all the emotional baggage we carry apart from the renewing of the mind.
Basic Gospel offers daily a steady diet of truth – truth that sets people free. That is what is so important to so many of our listeners like Lotta from Sweden who recently wrote this:
I'm listening to your podcast from Sweden and I think it is absolutely wonderful to hear you addressing and answering questions... My experience is that, if you have been under wrong teaching (where you mix grace and law and where you teach you can lose your salvation) it takes deprogramming and reprogramming. Your program has helped me so much with this as you are keeping it basic and focusing on the truth in all questions asked.
This truth propels people to get their eyes off of themselves and focus them squarely on the love of Jesus Christ. It is His love that changes us from the inside out.
This is why your prayers and financial help are so vitally important each and every month. Your financial gifts enable us to broadcast truth all over the world. Through your generosity, you are helping set people free the world over.
Quite frankly, your financial help is needed more than ever. The need has never been greater to unapologetically proclaim the basic gospel. It’s the only answer to the human heart. $410,000 is required between now and the end of the year. $50, $100, $150 or more means so much. Can you help us today?
Thank you for standing with us to deliver truth that sets people free. You are making a difference. As Paul wrote, your generosity is “overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God” (2 Corinthians 9:12).
I look forward to hearing from you soon. May you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving.
In His love and life,
