Forgiveness + Life = Freedom. Real freedom!
This is where the Gospel takes us. Paul put it this way, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." (Galatians 5:1) To the question, "What is God's will for my life?" freedom is God's answer.
It's what you've longed for all your life. Now it's yours. But here is the reality. Freedom can be scary. Robert Capon made this point in his book, Between Noon
What will you do with your new found freedom? How will you respond?
Legalism doesn't think you will handle it very well at all. It fears you will go wild without its control in your life. Subtly and not so subtly, legalism delivers the message, "You can't handle freedom."
"One of the problems with any authentic pronouncement of the gospel is that it introduces
us to freedom."
What I mean is this: Legalism is anything man does through human effort to earn God's love and acceptance. Legalism is a works based approach to God. Paul described this system concisely in his letter to the Romans: "Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation." (Romans 4:4 NIV) There is no way for us to earn God’s love and acceptance. It is simply impossible. The only things we can possibly earn through this works-based system are condemnation and death.
Through faith in Jesus you've escaped that system. You are not under law. You are under grace. You've been set free.
Through your prayers and gifts to Basic Gospel, you are setting others free with the Good News of Jesus Christ, people like Sara who wrote,
I listen to your program daily and get such a blessing. I absolutely love the way you guys handle the different people that call in to your ministry. You do it with real love and compassion. It just touches my heart. I plan on coming to one of your conferences again real soon. We need your voices out there to continue telling people about the love and grace of our Lord Jesus. It sure has changed my legalistic mindset over the years. And you've answered so many questions I had about how to understand the Bible better and how simple the gospel is. It's such a joy to grow in the knowledge and understanding of how much our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ loves us. I love all of you guys at Basic Gospel. May God continue to bless you, your families and the work that the Lord has called you to do.
Your sister in Christ, Sara
You and Sara know freedom in Christ is not something to take lightly. At every turn, our freedom is being attacked. When circumstances get tough, or when the temptations of the world and the desires of the flesh get strong, legalism tries to take control.
Paul sounded the warning: "Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1b)
This is why we need to continue to deliver the message of freedom and encourage believers to stand firm.
For Basic Gospel, we see this call to freedom as one of our primary missions. We are so grateful for those who stand with us on the front lines of this fight.
Here is the reality we face. Legalism, sin, religion and the world system want to keep us behind bars. Control is its only goal.
But God thinks differently. Freedom is his goal for us, and he has equipped us to handle it.
So I ask boldly – help us keep this message of freedom going out strong and clear with a generous gift today to Basic Gospel. Also, I encourage you to take up this fight for freedom in your sphere of influence.
Simple Gospel, Simply Grace is a wonderful resource to help you carry out this task. My good friend, Henry Shaffer, said this about the book: "Simple Gospel, Simply Grace is my new "go to tool" when I want to share God’s grace with others."
We have put together packs of 10, 30 and 60 books to help you make a difference in the lives of those you know and love. Maybe you have a college-bound student who needs to know that she can stand firm in her faith. Let’s continue to stand firm in the freedom that is ours in Christ. And let us continue delivering the truth that sets people free. Thank you for giving generously to make a stand for freedom.
