You may have heard a popular saying in Christian circles:
"We are in the world, but not of the world."
Although this saying isn't in the Bible, Jesus touched on this theme several times in his high-priestly prayer in John 17...
"I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world..." (Verse 11)
"...for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world." (Verse 14)
"They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." (Verse 16)
In the world... but not of it. This is the case for every believer. As Peter wrote, we are "aliens and strangers." (1 Peter 2:11) We don't fit in!
We've been set apart from the world. The biblical word is sanctified. It means to be set apart and made holy. It also means the "state of proper functioning."
Through the Gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit, God sanctifies us—sets us apart and makes us holy—so we can carry out His intended purpose for us. As Paul put it, "... for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light." (Ephesians 5:8)
Without the sanctifying work of the Spirit, we would still be in darkness, lost, spiritually dead and sinners by nature. But all that has changed. We are in the light, fully alive in Christ and saints by calling.
What mankind lost through Adam has now been restored in Jesus Christ!
And the truth is, the harder we try to live a holy life on our own, the more like the world we become. We can't live holy lives apart from Christ. It takes the power of God through the shed blood of Jesus and the energizing work of God's Spirit!
Your support of our Basic Gospel program helps bring this liberating truth to people all around the world... so they can stand firm in the truth that they "have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all." (Hebrews 10:10)
Let me encourage you with these words from Alicia, a listener in New York. She writes...
Your words on the radio every weekday are the reason I'm walking in Christ. Thank you for adhering to His calling. I am a faithful supporter of your ministry, and I will continue to do so as long as there is breath running through this temporary body of mine.
It's such a joy to tell believers like Alicia that they have been sanctified, set apart from what they once were. I love to point them to Paul's words to the Corinthians: "And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:11)
As people learn to rest in this wonderful reality, they realize they don't belong to the world anymore—and they begin to truly live as children of light!
It's Jesus's prayer being answered in them... "Sanctify them in the truth." (John 17:17)
All around you, there are people who are "dead in trespasses and sins, following the course of this world." (Ephesians 2:1), and they are longing to escape, to find a better way of life. Then there are those who are believers who struggle to set themselves apart from the sins of the flesh and the temptations of the world.
It's for these people that I'm asking you to give your most generous gift today to help bring the sanctifying work of the Gospel to their lives through Basic Gospel.
I'm so grateful for your partnership to help people all over the world believe and live the good news of Jesus Christ.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Because we have been set apart,
P.S. Thank you for returning your best gift to help share the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ with men and women all over the world. I'm grateful for your generosity!
