Early on in ministry I learned a very important truth…
Who or what you worship will ultimately control you.
Think about that. Who or what you bow to – who or what you elevate to the most important and meaningful place in your life – will inevitably shape the way you think, feel and act.
And sometimes you discover that those things or people don't have your best interests at heart.
A Basic Gospel listener named Debbie recently shared a perfect example of this with us...
I attended a private high school and church, and the condemnation and legalism I felt could not have been any worse. We recently had a high school reunion, and the discussion was about how we have all discovered real grace. For years, we lived miserably with all the church rules. And even if I didn't follow them, I always felt guilty for pretty much anything I did. From listening to The Carpenters and wearing pants, to going to the movies… everything was sinful!
Like so many people, Debbie was taught that following the "church rules" was the most important piece to the Christian life, so that's what she worshipped. And the results were devastating.
Thankfully, Debbie's story took a 180-degree turn. She learned that Jesus and Jesus alone is the one to worship and serve.
Wow! Wish I'd known this years ago. Life would have been so much more fun! I guess we're all on a journey to learning the truth, and I am so excited to share it with others. I just want everyone to know GOD'S GRACE!
Debbie now shares the grace, love and forgiveness of God with others. When I first read her story, I thought of Romans 12:1: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."
Worshipping God is about making yourself available to Him and allowing Him to live His life in and through you.
Debbie's story continues…
I was visiting my sister who was recently re-diagnosed with brain cancer, and she asked me how she could know her sins were forgiven. The Basic Gospel emails with the audio feature were the perfect way to reinforce the message of grace that I shared with her.
Now, she listens to Basic Gospel every day and knows that her sins are forgiven! In fact, she says, "How can I thank him for what he has done?" She wanted you to know how grateful she is for your messages. She's gone blind now from the cancer, and your program is the highlight of her day. Before, she thought she had to be perfect for God to love her... but now she knows He loves her just as she is!
Worshipping Christ means a life of joy, freedom and purpose in sharing this life with others. And, as Debbie's sister has found, a thankful heart is a heart full of worship.
I am so thankful for all that Christ is doing in Debbie's life and in the life of her sister. And I am thankful for you and the support you provide that connects people to the love of Christ and turns their hearts toward Him.
There are so many worthless things out there in the world capturing people's hearts – shaping the way they think, feel, and live. Only the gospel can win the battle for their hearts and lift them to worship the one who loves them most.
Through your support you are connecting people like Debbie and her sister to the grace and love of Christ. Thank you for your generosity.
I look forward to your quick response, and I pray you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. God bless you,
