Who wants to go back to the basics?
Shouldn’t we go on to the deeper things of God? Isn’t that what the writer of Hebrews tells us to do?
So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. (Hebrews 6:1)
So let’s mature. Let’s go deeper.
I agree, but let me ask you a question. Can you really mature if you don’t have the basics right? Can you truly go deeper into the love of God if you don’t understand the cross, the place where God demonstrated His love for you?
Let me make a bold statement.
If you don’t have the basics right, you will never grow and mature as a believer.
This was the case for Christine. Here is what she wrote after listening to the radio program for several months.
I have been a Christian for many years, but coming across your program has helped to answer questions that have puzzled me for quite awhile now. Embarrassed to ask friends and my pastor, feeling I should know the answers to these questions, the questions coming across your station while listening to the radio was an answer to prayer. Not only some of my questions have been answered, but I have realized that I am not the only seasoned Christian who still has questions about the Basics. Thank you gentlemen for all you do to declare the wonderful news of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Christine’s e-mail is why your support to Basic Gospel is critical. You are helping believers grow in grace and in their knowledge of Jesus Christ by equipping them with a solid understanding of the basics, truths like...
- Jesus is God.
- He forgave all our sins.
- We live in the New Covenant, not the Old.
- Salvation is receiving the life of Christ.
- Our new identity is children of God.
- We live by grace through faith, not through obedience to the law.
- Jesus Christ lives in us.
- His life guarantees our eternal salvation.
These are the essential truths that grow deep within the heart and work themselves out in day-to-day life.
As we begin this New Year, will you take time and renew your support to Basic Gospel?
There are way too many believers who do not have the basics right, and they are frustrated with their Christian lives.
Here is what I’ve learned in life. Whenever life gets messy, chaotic, or confusing, the wise get back to the basics. To right the ship, you have to get back to the fundamentals.
Vince Lombardi did exactly that when he took over the helm of the Green Bay Packers.
One particular day, Lombardi grew frustrated with his team. He blew his whistle. "Everybody stop and gather around," he yelled. Then he knelt down, picked up the pigskin and said, "Let's start at the beginning. Gentlemen, this is a football." He went back to the basics, the essentials of the game.
Under Lombardi’s leadership, the Green Bay Packers grew into a championship team winning the first two super bowls ever played.
Let’s help believers grow in grace and in their knowledge Jesus Christ by helping them get the basics right.
