John Lynch joined us on the broadcast recently to discuss depression. Almost 7% of the population in America suffer from depression. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among teens. John speaks to the power of the gospel to set people free from depression. John says "for some it's temporary, for some it's intermittent, for some it's the result of chronic pain, for some it's the result of bad theology, for many there is no apparent basis for depression". As long as hope is alive, we can continue to move forward. But, without hope, the darkness envelops us. Believers don't have to be afraid of this issue, but to recognize that you are adored by God, He is not ashamed or frustrated. The God of all grace, He will himself will perfect and confirm and strengthen and establish you. What a promise that is!

Bob begins this edition with a discussion on anxiety and depression. What we think controls how we feel. Let the truth of God's love and grace change how you think and you will see a change in how you feel. Self-pity makes us vulnerable to the things of the world. There is a path to peace and it rests in the person of Jesus Christ. Edson asks for clarification on 1 Corinthians 15:29, the great resurrection chapter. Is there a baptism on behalf of the dead? Esha asks how to know if what I am thinking is an answer from God or just my human thoughts? Ken from Georgia asks about the book of James. Is James 4:8 speaking to believers or unbelievers? The key is to realize that the word "sinner" is not used for a child of God. Believers are called "saints".

Calvin begins by asking if it is normal for a believer to have depression, anxiety, and stress? Why, as a saved person, do I let Satan control me like this? An email question asks about how to encourage a caregiver who made a decision that turned out not to be the right decision. They now are full of guilt and shame. Eddie asks about Matthew 13. Why would Jesus talk to the people in parables if he knew they wouldn't understand his point? Chris asks an interesting question. If God will accomplish His will with or without us, what is the significance of us participating? Do our "works" really matter? Perry comments on Romans 8:15 and how it ministered to him. He expresses thanks for Basic Gospel and the simple message of God's love and grace. It has made a difference in his life.

Calvin asks if it is normal for a believer to have blood pressure problems and anxiety. Bob points Calvin to the need for a thankful heart, recognizing Christ as a guard over your heart and mind. Curt asks about the Sermon on the Mount. Is it part of the Law? Bob explains the "inside-out" aspect of the Sermon on the Mount. An anonymous question asks what encouragement can be given to a former caregiver who made decisions that had horrible consequences. How do you restore them? Karen asks about how the proud can receive God's grace. Pride is a part of our heart before coming to Christ. Once we are humbled, recognizing we can't do it on our own, then we are ready for God's grace.

Bob Davis offers a Thanksgiving greeting. Chris asks about the value of praying for one another and should we pray for something more than once. Mark has been diagnosed as bipolar and also is addicted to nicotine. He is fearful of giving up nicotine thinking it might cause more episodes of bipolar symptoms. Ruth is confused about salvation. In Ephesians 2:8-9 it speaks as salvation as a gift of God. In Philippians 2:12 it says to work out your own salvation. Those two passages seem to contradict one another. A phone caller asks about tongues. Why is it that some churches put importance on tongues and others don't? Victoria called to ask about abiding in Christ. She wants to encourage others to abide in Christ.

Mark asks if sin breaks our fellowship with God. Does it also break our relationship? Bob explains what it means to be "in the light". Donna asks why her aunt, who has been a servant of God her whole life, is now having mental issues. Is she now out of the reach of God? Bob encourages her in ways to help. Dave asks why grace teachers seem to always gravitate beyond the message of grace. Bob addresses universalism and trinitarianism. Jose' asks if Jesus is God's grace to us? Bob and Richard agree wholeheartedly! You cannot separate Jesus and God's grace. Jesus is the one who is full of grace and truth. The grace of God is not a thing-it is the person of Jesus Christ.

Richard shares insight on this emotion-based view of Jesus. Ryan shares his diagnosis of terminal brain cancer and updates us on his latest test results. Richard explains assurance of salvation and how Ephesians 1:13-14 gives assurance of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Eddie asks about 1 John 3:9 - does it really mean we cannot sin? An interesting question that Bob and Richard tackle together! Curt asks who are the rulers and authorities mentioned in Ephesians 3:10?

Does it mean that one can lose their salvation? Bob explains that Revelation is the revelation of Jesus Christ and is full of good news for the believer! We received an anonymous email asking about the tribulation. How will people be saved during the tribulation? It's an interesting question. Freddy called from New York to comment on his belief that you can lose your salvation if you are not obedient. Bob takes him straight to the grace of God for the answer. We will lose hope if we focus on "do's and don'ts" and not on the person and work of Jesus Christ. Chris asks for insight on an issue he has with fear of hurting other people. Andrew gives an encouraging answer straight from the Word of God. Tim wants to know if we are "obligated" to go to church. Bob explains that the issue is not one of obligation, but of encouragement.

We address some important issues in this week's edition. First up is Martin who asks about the warning in Ephesians to not give the devil a foothold. We look to the context of scripture to answer this question and find that this passage is really an "attitude" passage and instruction to not let emotions have control over our actions. Sonia asks about adultery - can the adulterer be forgiven? Richard explains that while we have to bear the fruit of our behavior, if a believer falls into the trap of adultery, he still has the promise of redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Jose' asks for insight into how to properly study the Bible. The simple answer is `context, context, context'! Al called to find out what the "treasures in Heaven" are. Ephesians 1:3 holds the key to that question. We end with a call from Gary asking about the often misunderstood gift of tongues. Andrew and Richard explain the scriptural definition of tongues. Thanks for joining us and we pray this edition of Basic Gospel Weekend will be a benefit to you! See you next week!

Bob encourages her to let the finished work of Christ and the revealed Word of God renew her mind. Steven feels "beat up" by his pastor....shouldn't the Body of Christ be a place of encouragement? We end this week's edition with calls from two men both named Jose' - the first is a believer but remains paralyzed by fear of letting God down. The second Jose' called to encourage him to hold on to the truth of God's love. Thanks for listening!
